Permanent Hair Removal: Laser Removal vs Electrolysis

 By Rachel Myers

What's the best permanent hair removal method: laser hair removal or electrolysis? Laser hair removal is the better option for most people. However, there are some cases where electrolysis may be the best option. Here are some things to consider when deciding on the best permanent hair removal method for you.

Cost of Treatment

When it comes to cost, laser hair removal usually wins out over electrolysis. This is mainly because lasers can target many hairs at once, whereas electrolysis must be done one hair follicle at a time.

Time & Number of Treatments

Laser hair removal is typically done in a series of appointments spread out 4-6 weeks apart. On average, it takes seven sessions to completely remove the hair in a given area. The total time for treatment usually ranges from 6 months to one year.

Electrolysis requires a lot more appointments. A small area such as the upper lip or bikini line can take 20-40 visits, while a large area may take 100-200 sessions or more. Depending on the frequency of appointments, it can take 2-4 years to completely treat a large area such as the legs.

Pain

A study published in the January 2000 issue of Dermatalogic Surgery concluded that Alexandrite laser hair removal is less painful, faster, and more reliable than electrolysis. Keep in mind, however, that pain is subjective. Some people are more sensitive to it than others. In addition, the amount of pain experienced during laser hair removal can vary depending on the spot size, power settings, and type of laser being used.

How Well Does It Work?

The most important question for most people is, "Does it work?" For electrolysis, the answer is yes. For laser hair removal? It depends.

Laser hair removal works best on people with dark hair and light-colored skin. There are now lasers that can remove hair on people with dark skin, but lasers are still not effective for people with light-colored hair. This includes natural blondes, people with white or gray hair, and redheads. For permanent hair removal, these people have no choice but electrolysis.

Reviews

When trying to decide which procedure to have done, it's always a good idea to read some reviews. RealSelf.com is one site that has reviews for both laser hair removal and electrolysis. On this particular site, the percentage of satisfied customers is nearly the same for both. 70% of those who had laser hair removal said it was worth what they paid, and 68% of those who had electrolysis felt their investment was worthwhile.

Whichever method you choose, make sure you select an experienced professional to administer the treatments. The technician's skill level can make a huge difference in the amount of discomfort you will experience.
